Anil Khanal
[edit]Anil Khanal (Nepali: अनिल खनाल; born 02 May, 1996 A.D. / 2053-01-20 B.S.) is a Nepali lyricist and composer renowned for his contributions to modern, folk, and film music in Nepal. With a repertoire of approximately 200 songs, Khanal has collaborated with numerous prominent Nepali artists.[1]
Early Life and Background
[edit]Khanal was born in Dhurkot Rural Municipality-2, Pipaldhara, Kataunje, Gulmi District, Nepal. His parents are Keshav Raj Khanal and Pushpa Khanal, and his grandparents are Dilliraj Khanal and Bijula Devi Khanal. He currently resides in Kathmandu.
Career
[edit]Khanal's musical journey began with his first recorded modern song, "Sarpale Jhai Dasera Gayau", featured in the album Anil, around 2069/70 B.S. The song showcased lyrics by Khanal, music by Rajkumar Bagar, and vocals by Swaroop Raj Acharya, and was produced and distributed by Bindhyabasini Music Pvt. Ltd..
His first folk duet, "Mero Sanu Kaha Holin", was released through Bhavana Music Solution, with lyrics and melody by Khanal, and vocals by Devi Gharti and Prem Bardewa.[2]
Khanal also penned the patriotic song "Balideu Mero Shir", composed by Santosh Pragadh and sung by Urmila Rai. In 2021, Khanal gained media attention for transitioning from modern and folk music to film music with his song in the movie Timro Hune Kahile.[3]

His debut in the film industry came with the song "Daiba Lagyo Maya Ma Sansarai Dadhayo" in the film Timro Hune Kahile, directed by Raju Giri and released in 2078 B.S. The song featured lyrics by Khanal, music by Babul Giri, and vocals by Ram Bhakta Jojiju.
In 2025, Khanal's lyrics were featured in the song "Binaswadai" performed by Ramchandra Chand, which was released by DCNepal and Ratopati.[4][5]
His lyrical work and contributions to Nepali music are also discussed in Krishna Hari Baral's book गीत सिद्धान्त र इतिहास, which explores the history and theory of Nepali lyrics.[6]

[edit]Khanal has collaborated with numerous notable Nepali singers and musicians, including Narendra Pyasi, Ram Bhakta Jojiju, Biju Bajra, Rajkumar Bagar, Swaroop Raj Acharya, Mausam Madhur, Santosh Pragadh, Khuman Adhikari, Kulendra Bishwakarma, Ramchandra Chand, Devi Gharti, Purnakala B.C., Narhari Premi, and Babul Giri.
Recognition and Awards
[edit]- In 2072 B.S., his song "Sarpale Jhai Dasera Gayau" was nominated in the Top 5 at the Bindhyabasini Music Awards.
- In 2076 B.S., he received the Epic Nepal Music Award (Jury Category) for the song "Farkera Aideuna Niramaya" in the category of Best Folk Duet (Jury).
- In 2079 B.S., he was honored with the NIM Music Award (Jury) for Best Folk Lyricist for the song "Bachchaki Aama".[7]
