Anat is an impact crater on Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon..[1]

Reference point of Ganymede's longitudes

[edit]

This crater of 2.9 km in diameter is the reference point for measuring longitude on Ganymede. By convention, Anat is at 128 degrees longitude. Anat is positioned at 128° west longitude. In cartography, this corresponds to the prime meridian reference system, where longitudes are measured relative to 0° longitude on a celestial body.

Anat is thus located at 128 degrees longitude west of the prime meridian which, in cartography, serves as a reference for longitude, i.e. 0° longitude, on the scale of a celestial body.

Ganymede's rotation is synchronous as it orbits Jupiter. This first meridian, the origin of longitudes (0°) corresponds to the mean position of the point on the face of Ganymede always exposed to Jupiter[2]

Etymology

[edit]

it is named after Anat, the Assyro-Babylonian goddess of dew.[1]
