Ali Demircan is a Canadian community leader, gun violence prevention advocate, and survivor of the 2018 Danforth Avenue shooting in Toronto. He is a co-founder of the Danforth Families for Safe Communities (DFSC), a grassroots coalition of survivors and families affected by gun violence. Demircan has played a prominent role in national discussions on gun control and mental health policy, and he currently serves as the President of the Federation of Canadian Turkish Associations (FCTA).
Early Life and Background
[edit]Demircan immigrated to Canada from Türkiye and settled in Toronto. Prior to his advocacy work, he worked in content moderation and international trade. He has also been involved in community and cultural organizing within the Turkish-Canadian diaspora.
Danforth Shooting and Advocacy
[edit]On July 22, 2018, Demircan was among the victims injured during the mass shooting on Toronto’s Danforth Avenue, which killed two people and wounded 13 others. His experience as a survivor led him to co-found Danforth Families for Safe Communities, a group that advocates for stronger gun control legislation in Canada.
Demircan has been an outspoken supporter of Bill C-21 (44th Canadian Parliament), a federal gun control bill introduced to ban handguns and restrict assault-style firearms. He has appeared at multiple press conferences, vigils, and memorials to call for legislative change and to push for better mental health support services, especially for survivors of trauma.
Leadership Roles and Community Work
[edit]Since 2023, Demircan has served as the President of the Federation of Canadian Turkish Associations, where he has focused on strengthening cultural representation, promoting youth education, and organizing humanitarian initiatives, including meal programs for children in earthquake-affected regions of Türkiye.
In addition to his role with FCTA and DFSC, Demircan has worked with federal and provincial leaders to promote gun control, support mental health access, and represent multicultural community interests in Canadian policy.
