Alex van Gelder (born 1937) is Belgian photographer and art collector.

Biography

[edit]

From a Dutch family, Alex Van Gelder grew up in Wales before moving to Benin at the age of 25. His photographic practice explores the ambiguous space between life and death and the role played by the photographic image.

Portraits of Louise Bourgeois in the last year of her life (Mumbling Beauty) are echoed by severed animal heads coming out of slaughterhouses (Meat Portraits); he confronts the soul and body of his subjects to capture the inevitable disappearance.

These obsessions follow him as a collector of contemporary and traditional art, notably through a collection of African portraits of the 20th century.
