Aamir Khan Productions (AKP) is an Indian film and television production company established in 1999 by actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan. Based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the company has produced a range of films and television programmes, including several that have received critical and commercial recognition.
History
[edit]Aamir Khan established Aamir Khan Productions with the aim of producing content-driven cinema. The company’s first production, Lagaan (2001), directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, was both a commercial success and critically acclaimed. It received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won numerous national and international awards.[7][8][9][10]
Following the success of Lagaan, the company produced several notable films, including Taare Zameen Par (2007), which marked Aamir Khan's directorial debut, and dealt with the issue of dyslexia in children. Other acclaimed productions include Peepli Live (2010), Delhi Belly (2011), Dangal (2016), Secret Superstar (2017), and Laal Singh Chaddha (2022).[11][12][13]

Recent developments
[edit]In 2024, Aamir Khan Productions announced plans to restructure its operations with the aim of functioning as an independent studio.[29] The same year, the company appointed Aparna Purohit, former Head of Originals at Amazon Prime Video India and Southeast Asia, as its chief executive officer.[30]
Laapataa Ladies (2024)
[edit]Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, was released in 2024. Set in rural India in the early 2000s, the film was written by Sneha Desai based on a story by Biplab Goswami, with additional dialogues by Divyanidhi Sharma. It featured actors Nitanshi Goel and Pratibha Ranta in lead roles. The film was selected as India’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.[31] A behind-the-scenes video featuring Aamir Khan auditioning for the role of Inspector Manohar received attention online. The role was ultimately played by Ravi Kishan.[32]
Lahore 1947 (upcoming)
[edit]Lahore 1947 is an upcoming historical drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions. The film features Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Abhimanyu Singh, and Ali Fazal. Set during the Partition of India, the project marks Preity Zinta’s return to film after a hiatus. Principal photography was completed in a 70-day schedule.[33][34]
Sitaare Zameen Par (2025) and OTT release decision
[edit]In 2025, the company released Sitaare Zameen Par, which was noted for its themes related to childhood development and education. The film recorded an increase in box office collections on its second day.[citation needed] Media reports indicated that the production house declined an OTT distribution offer in favour of an exclusive theatrical release.[35] Following the release, the company issued a statement thanking the Multiplex Association of India for its support.[36]
During the film’s promotion, Aamir Khan Productions updated its social media profile image to the Indian national flag. The action prompted mixed responses online, with some interpreting it as a patriotic gesture and others viewing it as an attempt to mitigate backlash linked to previous controversies.[37][38][39]
Collaborations and Recognition
[edit]Aamir Khan Productions has been known for collaborating with emerging and established filmmakers. The studio congratulated the team of Pushpa 2: The Rule on its blockbuster success in December 2024, earning appreciation from actor Allu Arjun and Mythri Movie Makers.[40][41]
