Bloodaxe is an upcoming historical drama drama television series created by Michael Hirst and his son Horatio Hirst, set in the 10th century. The series will chronicle the true story of the legendary Viking warrior Eiríkr Haraldsson better known as Erik Bloodaxe[1] and his wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. It is reported that it will follow Erik's ascent to throne of Norway.[2][3]
The series started filming on 2 June 2025 in Wicklow, Ireland.[4]

- Jessica Madsen as Gunnhild, the wife of Erik Bloodaxe, known as the "Mother of Kings"[6]
- Levi Miller as Haakon the Good, the younger half-brother of Erik Bloodaxe[7]
- Karlis Arnolds Avots as Egil[8]
- Rod Hallett as Athelstan, the King of Wessex[8]
- Alina Tomnikov as Greta who can secretly transform into The Seer, a mystical figure with divine visions of the future[8]
- Sisse Marie as Thyra, Queen of Denmark[8]
- Rune Temte as Gorm, King of Denmark[8]
- Jesper Christensen as King Harald Fairhair, the aging First King of Norway[8]
Production

[edit]On 6 March 2025 it was announced that Michael Hirst would return to the viking age era for his next work. Variety reported that he and Horatio Hirst have developed a new historical drama called Bloodaxe for Amazon Prime Video.[2] This series will be another entry in the Hirsts' Viking themed work, following his development of the popular History Channel series Vikings and his role as executive producer on Netflix's Vikings: Valhalla.[9] Horatio had an acting roles in 4 episodes of Vikings: Valhalla as Bishop Grimketel,[10] with Bloodaxe he will be writing for a series for the first time with Bloodaxe.[11]
The filming started in Ireland and Iceland later summer 2025.[12]
Bloodaxe's father was Harald Fairhair, a character that was featured in several seasons of Vikings portrayed by Peter Franzén.[13]
