On 25 February 2021, 23-year-old Ayesha Banu Makrani from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India died by suicide after jumping into the Sabarmati River.[1][2]

Incident

[edit]

Makrani married a man from Rajasthan in 2018. According to her family, she was harassed for dowry and faced domestic violence. She left her husband’s home multiple times, but returned each time hoping things would improve.[3] On 25 February 2021, Makrani went to the bank of the Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, where she recorded a short video message on her phone. In the video, she said she didn’t want to blame anyone and wanted peace. She sent the video to her husband and then jumped into the river. Police found her body after that day.[4]

[edit]

Makrani’s husband was charged with abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code. Police said Makrani was mentally harassed and faced pressure for dowry. Her husband was arrested in Rajasthan and taken into custody by the Gujarat Police.[5]
