Añón de Moncayo (until 1991 known simply as Añón)[2] is a municipality located in the Province of Zaragoza, in the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain. According to the 2020 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 187 inhabitants.[3]
Geography
[edit]Añón de Moncayo is situated on the western slopes of the Moncayo Massif, inside the Parque Natural del Moncayo. The municipality lies at an altitude of about 836 meters (2,742 ft) above sea level and covers an area of approximately 64 square kilometers.[4] The area is characterized by its rugged landscape, pine forests, and Mediterranean-continental climate.
History
[edit]The origins of Añón date back to the medieval period, when it served as a strategic settlement due to its proximity to the Moncayo mountain. The town was historically part of the Community of Calatayud until administrative reorganization placed it in the comarca of Tarazona y el Moncayo.[5] In 1991, the official name was changed to Añón de Moncayo to distinguish it from other localities.[6]
Main sights
[edit]- Añón Castle — This medieval castle, partially restored, overlooks the village and reflects its defensive importance during the Middle Ages.[7]
- Parish Church of Saint Catherine — Built in the 16th century, the church displays Gothic-Mudejar elements and features a distinctive bell tower.[8]
- Moncayo Natural Park — The municipality provides access to trails and natural attractions within this protected area.[9]
Economy
[edit]The local economy is primarily based on traditional agriculture, including cereal crops, vineyards, and orchards. Livestock farming and rural tourism also play important roles, with many visitors attracted by the natural park and cultural heritage.[10]
Demographics
[edit]Añón de Moncayo has experienced significant population decline over the past century, typical of many rural Spanish villages. The municipality has taken steps to promote sustainable tourism and attract new residents through restoration of historical buildings and improved services.[11]
