On the morning of 11 May 2025 a bus careened off a cliff in Garadiella near the town of Kotmale in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. 22 people were killed and more than 34 injured. The over crowded bus that belong to the Sri Lanka Transport Board which had capacity for 50 passengers was carrying 84 passengers, had left Kataragama depot at 10 pm on May 10 and was on its way to Kurunegala, total distance of over 250 km. The police investigation into the crash found that the "likely that the driver was fatigued and fell asleep at the wheel, leading to the accident", with the driver being on duty for over 13.5 hours.[1][2]

On June 11, the police committee appointed to investigate incident handed their report to Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.[3]
