Early in the morning of July 19, 2025, a driver rammed his car into a crowd of people in the East Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, United States.[1] More than 30 were injured, including 7 critically.[2] Enraged bystanders dragged the driver from his gray first-generation Nissan Versa, beat him, and shot him.[2]
Events
[edit]The attack occurred around 2 a.m. on July 19, 2025, outside a music club near the intersection of North Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.[1] The driver had been kicked out of the club twice for being intoxicated and disruptive to others, as well as fighting with other people.[2] Exactly eight minutes after being kicked out the venue for a second time, the driver started up his Nissan Versa, mounted onto the sidewalk and drove into a crowd of clubgoers, valets, and taco vendors.[1][3] By the time police officers arrived, members of the crowd had pulled the driver from the car and were beating him; emergency medical personnel subsequently found the driver had been shot.[1] Video footage taken by bystanders showed the attacking driver being kicked in the head and squirted with condiments.[2]
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said the car ramming attack was intentional and the driver was shot after the attack; the bystander who shot the attacking driver escaped.[2]
Suspect
[edit]The LAPD identified the driver as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez (born March 1996) of Long Beach, California.[4][5] After getting beatened, kicked in the head, and getting shot by a bystander who remains on the run, he was loaded by Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) onto Rescue Ambulance 13, where he was briefly taken to the hospital before being booked into Los Angeles County Jail several hours later on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce greater bodily injury.[6]
Reactions
[edit]Mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass called the event a "heartbreaking tragedy".[7]
